Squash House 1 Year Anniversary & A Giveaway!

Today marks our first year at the Squash House! It's been quite a year - and every day was worth it! Mr. Squash and I are very happy here - we feel we landed in the right spot! I thought this month I would bring you some before and after photos of how we've transformed the Squash House! I might even throw in a giveaway here and there, too - starting today!

This is what our kitchen looked like before and after our transformation. We kept the original footprint, but added 1.5 inch thick butcher block counters, Marmoleum flooring, new cabinet doors, drawer fronts and hardware, new sink and faucet, a beach-glass tiled backsplash, new lighting, paint and of course, all new stainless appliances. I love it all - the only thing I would do differently next time is have a darker stain on the butcher block, a gas stove (gas was not available when we did the work), and I might think twice about stainless appliances - they are so hard to keep clean! You might be able to get a better look by clicking on the photo. The "before" is something I enlarge from the real estate listing, so it will be a bit blurry.
I've been busily decorating for Christmas - something we had no time to do last year as we were mired in boxes and unpacking. I had to have this Jim Shore music box! I've got it right inside the front door on an oak secretary. When switched on it has little lights around the sleigh! I wasn't going to get it because of the price, but I got on Google and was able to find a seller who shaved a very considerable amount off the retail price! It pays to go to page two and three of Google searches when you really want something!

Okay - now to the giveaway - a charm pack of 12 Days of Christmas and the Lil' Twister Tool which is a fun way to make pinwheels! Perhaps this will give you some inspiration for that last-minute gift, or you can make something for next Christmas! In order to qualify, you must either have a blog with contact info, or if you're commenting without a blog, a way to contact you back. So please leave a comment telling me what remodeling/updating job you would love to do in your house! I will pick a winner at random this coming Tuesday, Dec. 7th!

I love your kitchen remodel. It looks gorgeous, like a magazine! We moved here 7 yrs. ago and I still feel like I'm mired in boxes! Happy Anniversary to you and Mr. Squash!!

What an amazing change in that kitchen. You new kitchen must be a pleasure to work in.
We live in a rental, so no renovations for us!
Happy House Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary! I love your butcher block counters. We have still have the builder's laminate.

The project I most want done, is for my husband to repair our screened in patio. It was damaged by Hurricane Ike and is STILL not fixed. We live in mosquitoville so we really need the screens.

Your kitchen has turned out so nice. I would love to have my cabinets done.

Happy Anniversary! Your remodel is quite impressive. I bet it makes you want to spend more time in the kitchen.
I'd like to remodel all of bathrooms. We did the kitchen 3 years ago but the bathrooms remain stuck in the 70s.

I like what you have done with the remodel. I have been thinking about stainless steel and never thought about it getting dirty easily. I currently have white appliances and they pick up any type of stains. I plan to redo the floors in my bathroom. When the house was built they put carpet in there and we did not notice it until the end. I HATE CARPET IN THE BATHROOM. So I am talking my husband into helping me do tile.

Your kitchen looks beautiful. Happy Anniversary!

WOW, the kitchen looks GREAT. I'm thinking of putting wood floors in the family room and dining room but we're also considering selling so don't know if I want to bother. Thanks for the giveaway!!

I love your new kitchen, the cupboard doors are gorgeous! I would really love to redo our kitchen, it is original to the house (14 yrs old) and was cheap and nasty at the time so it hasn't worn well!

Hi Mrs. Squash... I love what you did with your kitchen... You two did an amazing job and it looks very functional... Happy Anniversary to you both... :) I am renting a house but if I could buy it I have so many ideas ... I would extend the up stairs to go over the garage to make another bathroom and large bedroom... Also, I would love to have an enclosed and make a 3 season room off our den...:) Count me in on the giveaway... Just click on the envelope at the end of any one of my posting and I will get a email... :)

My kitchen needs remodeling most. However, it functions and I love to sew and I really, really want a bedroom makeover. Probably the bedroom will win. Love your kitchen redo. Happy quilting.

It is amazing to see the transformation of your kitchen. I would love to renovate my kitchen, but alas the economy has put a hold on that. I am also dreaming of adding on a room, oh well, maybe in another year or so. Happy anniversary!

My master bedroom is a definite redo job. I need to pull of the wallpaper from 15 years ago when we built the house. This would extend into the master bath. We need to redo our shower. I wouldn't advise anyone to put marble in a shower for the base. We did it as an upgrade from the tile bz I didn't want to worry about the grout lines. I'll take the grout lines lol!

Love your kitchen redo. I've heard that about stainless appliances though so I'm glad I have the ones I have!

Wow a year already! I think we have the same fridge...let's see...though I love my house it doesn't have enough bedrooms when we have company so I would love to add 2 more bedrooms and I know exactly how I would do it, now to find the money! I do love what you did with the kitchen!

The first year in the Squash House was a busy one - the kitchen is delightful. Love your Santa - very cute!

We've only been in our house for 5 years and I'm still quite content so I don't think there's anything I want or need to remodel.

WoolenSails said...

I love how you redid the kitchen. We have a small kitchen and really want a larger stove, will have to show my husband the photos, so he can see, that we can do it too;)

Well, you know what I want. It includes a new living room, master bedroom and bath, and will remodel the existing bedrooms and bathroom. It just might happen this next spring. Sigh.

AnnieO said...

Your kitchen looks like a wonderful place to spend time now, rather than a cold white box! Congratulations on your finding "home".

We remodeled our kitchen about 6 years ago and have never regretted it. Next I would like to remodel the master bath, which is now 20 years old and full of builder basic boring stuff that is wearing out, literally. DH and I are both tall and would love to have a vanity that doesn't require full waist bends to use the sink! Thanks for the giveaway :)

I can imagine how beautiful your home will be all decked out for the holidays! What a good feeling to know you've found the right place to retire. Happy Anniversary. I will not consider stainless steel again. Please make sure one of your other readers wins your very cute and generous prize. :o)

Your home looks lovely. I would like to get rid of all the "knock down" texturizing on our walls. UGH! Who would do that to a 65 year old house?! imxlds2@hotmail.com

Mary said...

Candace, Your kitchen is beautiful. Great job. There are way too many things we need to update our house. Too many to list. All in good time though!

Anne said...

Great transformation there girly! I know how happy you are in retirement. Are you gonna show more before and afters? Love them.

Kathy said...

I'd love to remodel our master bath. Ours is two separate rooms - sinks in one area, and then a door between that and the toilet/tub room. We remodeled the sink part, but now we need to do the rest. It will be a big job, though, so I'm putting it off!

deserae said...

I would love to finish my basement so I can have two bathrooms instead of one!

Our bathroom really needs work. The shower walls are chipped and there's a leak behind the wall...or was..hubby has changed the leaky faucet...
I would love a patio or terrace as well...someplace private outside besides the front porch swing.
Your redo is looking great and modern.

There are two jobs that I want done, one is the kitchen and I have been drooling over your make over! The other is to replace all the doors/hardware/frames. They are original doors that have been painted, and painted,....

Kitchen looks great!
We are finally remodeling (had to wait for property to sell). Turning a useless little porch/deck off of our kitchen into a BIG walk in pantry!! I'm so excited. The freezer, trash compactor will both go in there and I can finally unpack the many boxes still in the garage with kitchen goodies. It is all enclosed now - time to start thinking PAINT!

PEGGY said...

I am the remodeling queen....I do one or two projects a year :)
My kitchen though is 16 years old and I'd like to change it around a little and get new cabinets etc....
Hubby says the powder room needs doing first so I guess that's what's next.

Jackie said...

I can't believe it's been a year already! It just flew.

The winner is going to enjoy the goodies. I made a Little Twister table runner out of that same fabric. It was quick, easy, and fun!

Happy holidays and Happy Anniversary! I have followed your blog and remodel and so enjoy your blog. I have transitioned to a town house in my recent move to the East coast to be closer to my children. I am working on a sewing room/office...so really have enjoyed your make overs.

Nice kitchen update, would love to get the upstairs bedroom & bath redone, the bedroom has become a storage room and it's driving me crazy. I need to clean it out and get painting and hubby needs to install the hardwood floors.
Then a quick paint job on the dressers and set up the antique bed my mom gave me (she was born in that bed). whew have I got my work cut out for me. Lovely giveaway, thanks for the chance.

great work on the kitchen remodel! one day I want to do mine, townhouse was built in '84,very dated! congrats on the annversary! (mauh) Liz

Happy Anniversary. Your new kitchen is beautiful, especially the glass front cabinets. The rennovation that we would like in our NEW house is to have exterior doors that seal correctly - especially the ones in the kitchen.

I like your kitchen remodel, very nice. Good for you and your husband finding your perfect place to live. What a nice giveaway, thanks for the chance to win.

Karen said...

Your kitchen looks beautiful. I think it actually looks taller in the "after." Funny how that happens! I love your Jim Shore, it DOES pay to go to the second page.

Oh, if I had an unlimited budget and a crew... I've got plans all over the place in my head, but the one thing I can't figure out is where I can squeeze in a window seat! If I were seriously going to make changes, I would start in the kitchen; besides the obvious floor/counter/cabinets I would move a door to put in a banquet and some built-ins.

Congratulations on a year in your home! What a happy place :)

QuiltSue said...

Happy movingversary. I love what you did to the kitchen, but would agree about stainless steel appliances!

I love the fabric you're offering in your giveaway.

Love your kitchen remodel! I'd love to have a new kitchen. We bought our stove second hand 20 years ago and it still works but is really stone age :) And I'd love to have a work island with storage underneath...and new flooring and cabinets...ahhh dreaming is fun!
Happy anniversary!

i would love to update my bathrooms! My house was built in the 80's and is starting to look dated.
Happy Anniversary!

Lovely kitchen! Oh, I empathize with your not being able to use that kitchen while the work was being done, but it looks like it was worth the sacrifice. I'd love to re-do my little sewing loft. It's only 80 s.f. and I'd love to have a wall of cabinetry for better organization. Thanks for the chance to win!! ~~Lisa

We just finished putting in new Quartz countertops in the kitchen with new stainless appliance last year at this time. Honestly...you've been there a year? Doesn't seem possible!
My next project...well the next project I would love to do is getting rid of that old bubble gum pink bathroom vanity counter...a cheap fix really but then I want an old looking tub installed and if that gets done why not replace the shower so I can sit to shave...the list goes on...it never ends. LOL
Happy Holidays.

You kitchen is beautiful. I love how open and airy it is! Thanks for the chance to win your awesome giveaway!
One YEAR ago we put in wood floors in our living room and hallway.....we have YET to put the new trim up and the crown molding we planned on!! I know it wouldn't take very long, we just haven't been motivated to do it :/

Was that a wolf in the background? The remodel looks very nice. If I could remodel it would be my sewing -room. To cold and to crowded!

Great job on the kitchen. I have lived in my house 29 years and finally got it paid for. LOL The kitchen needs a redo and I was glad to see your post on the stainless. Now I know it isn't what I want. Also, need a redo on one of my bathrooms as it is really outdated.

Mary said...

Well, I live in my dream house and it's pretty new, so I wouldn't be remodeling. About all I'd do differently is have four small kitchen drawers where I have two giant drawers. FYI Mrs. Meyers brand of stainless steel spray cleaner does a great job, smells wonderful and helps the SS stay clean--I battle with it, but love it anyway!

Pokey said...

Happy Anniversary and congratulations on you kitchen reformation. I'd love to have the wood countertops you have, I think that is one thing I'd change in my home. But we have been working our house over, little by little. Thanks for the giveaway.

I would LOVE to remodel our kitchen. We live in a 1911 house and the previous owners redid the kitchen 1n 1991 and did a terrible job. I would love to restore it in the style of the house.

Hi there, stranger. Hope you and Mr. Squash are well, warm and wonderful.

I had taken just over a month off of blogging to regroup - and I'm doing a bit of catch-up. Mainly checking in on my dearest blogging buddies (yeppers- you're one of those blogging buddies...LOL)

Isn't Google wonderful? I go there comparing prices quite often. And when I can find something that I'm looking for without shipping or taxes applies - it makes my day.

I just hubby for a "job" yesterday. I think you can relate to this: From my old Bernina 200 that I traded in to get my current Bernina - I still have the acrylic table that fits the 200. I adked hubby if he's saw/sand the opening so it can fit on my Bernina 830 arm.

A year already? Amazing changes in your home - life is good....GIVE A HUG.

Here's yours: HUG HUG HUG HUG

Great Remodel.
Our old house could use so much work it is hard to decide which one ti pick-- maybe replacing the old drafty windows on the first floor? replacing the chipped tub and plywood vanity in the first floor bath? Replacing a sliding glass door that is too small and doesn't open?

Colleen G said...

I have enjoyed watching while you transformed your new house into a home that fits you and yoru husband. We built ours four years ago but continue to add finishing details. Our next project will be to add a window seat in our dining area both for storage and extra seating. I look forward to the day when I can sit in the window with a good book and bask like a cat in the sunshine.

Kathy Alden said...

I absolutly love your kitchen remodel! The oven looks wonderful. The area of my home I would like to remodel is my sewing room. Its 500 sq ft but has carpet on the floor and I would like to change that and add more built in cabinets for storage! Happy anniversary to Squash House!!
